Dubai Police cracking down on drink driving

A team of cops are patrolling Dubai’s roads in the early hours of the morning to snare drunk drivers.


Motorists suspected of drink-driving will be breathalysed on the spot under new measures from Dubai Police

General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, head of Dubai Traffic Police, revealed that special patrols are being deployed from midnight until 6am every day to crack down on drink driving and they will breathalyse motorists on the spot if they are suspected of having consumed alcohol.“The team was created recently and their job is to monitor motorists, especially ones swerving between lanes and driving erratically,” Al Zafeen said.

Motorists suspected of drink-driving will be breathalysed on the spot under new measures from Dubai Police“The team consists of four patrols, who will work near hotels and clubs.” Al Zafeen added: “We will ask suspicious motorists to stop and use the breathalyser machine to check if they are drunk or not.“We will issue a ticket for drunk drivers then refer them to traffic prosecution.” Al Zafeen spoke about the new team as police revealed drink-driving figures for 2012.The stats showed there were 295 traffic accidents caused by drink-driving, compared to 327 in 2011. They also revealed that four people were killed in 2012 in such accidents, which was also down on 2011, when 15 people died.A further 93 people were injured in drink-driving accidents in 2012, compared to 77 people the previous year. Those caught drink driving can face jail, a Dhs20,000 fine or both.ali.shouk@7days.ae
